Skyartec FREE X Skyview: GPS quadcopter with gimbal

I accidentally came across this FREE X Skyview quadcopter from Skyartec. It was launched on the beginning of 2014 and, unfortunately, it was removed suddenly from some online shops. There are two possible reasons it was removed from the market: it has some hidden issues or it’s a 100% clone of another branded quadcopter.

The Free X SkyView is a versatile and affordable GPS quadcopter. Designed to do aerial filming with the latest GoPro 4 cameras, it is also a beginner-friendly quadcopter because you can fly it right out of box —no need for any complex assembling, pre-flight settings or programming of the Free X SkyView quadcopter.

Installing the high-quality self-tightening propellers on the brushless motors is very easy. Beginners will be guided on the installation process by some marks found on the propellers and the quadcopter’s arms. There is no way to install the wrong propeller on the wrong motor.

Using a 7-channel 2.4 GHz remote controller, the FREE X Skyview has an outstanding 1 km flight range.

The latest FreeX flight controller will ensure that the Skyartec FREE X Skyview quadcopter will never show any out-of-control drift or out-of-control fly away behavior, even if the GPS, magnetometer, or compass are damaged.

The Skyartec FREE X supports firmware upgrades by USB Dongle for better flight performances or any other improvements. Later I will upload the latest FREE X firmware in the download section.

After you receive your new FREE X Skyview, just unbox your quadcopter, load the battery, install the propellers, mount the gimbal with few screws, put your GoPro 4 camera on, power it up, and you are ready to capture some outstanding 4K Aerial videos.

  1. I have/had two Free X models one which flew away in I.O.C. mode and one which I recently bought two months ago. I love flying the Quad copter but I find on occasion it develops a sort of out of control phase “sometimes” after take off with a fresh battery and in GPS mode. I dont understand why this happens and thankfully I use a large open area to fly it but it does make me a little uneasy in thinking I could potentially have this happen in a more built up area.
It tends to drift in altitude on hoover and also when flying into a strong breeze. I have found on several occasions that it has gained up to 35 metres in altitude returning back over a distance of over 500 metres. Even by holding the control lever down whilst flying forward it sometimes resists dropping in altitude in a light headwind !!
Overall I love the Free X with its imperfections as it does do what it says it does most of the time………..but the I.O.C. mode is extremely confusing and the Return to Home function has on vary rare occasions done peculiar times leaving me climbing up 15 meters on an Oak tree to recover……………………………..even so I love my Free X warts and all

  2. The worst customer service of any company in the industry. I just got my free x drone last Tuesday. The gimbal would not stop twitching. I pushed the rest button to stop it. So i checked the controller to test the gimbal. Nothing happen after few minutes and twitching came back. It did these twice. The third time instead of trying to get controls working. Instead of twitching coming back the flight controller went up in smoke. I have been trying to reach them thru phone, email, and Facebook with no results back from them.

  3. I just found this model on sale for 240$ with FreeX Onetouch 4 flight controller.
Did you test it? I’m curious it works the Altitude hold and headless mode.
    Appreciate your feedback.

  4. Loving the FreeX experience…Love it so much I now, as of last week have FIVE Skyartec FreeX quadcopters…If there is a weak link with the FreeX I’d have to say the ESC’s but I do fly quite aggressively…For those of you that own a FreeX I’ve created ‘FreeX Quadcopter Enthusiasts’ group for English speaking owners Worldwide…Feel FREE to join us.

  5. My experience with the Freex was totally different then yours. I have owned several Quad Copters, including the QRX350 PRO, elfite 350 and 2 different DJI quads. The freex delivered on everything it advertised and after 100 flights is still working correctly. I recently upgraded to the newest version 4 firmware that added additional features – the only thing I have had to replace was a landing gear and a few props, from a couple of hard landings (totally my fault) Nowe I amd thinking about adding the high capacity bottom body that will hold 5000mh battery and with larger landing gear.
The guys at Park RC Models, here in the USA will test fly and setup everything for you before shipment – they even sent me a video of the test flight.
I am very happy and impressed with the quality of the FreeX and would strongly suggest it as a first Quad – for you.

    • Hi there, I also own the Free X and agree with you too. This is a great quad-copter. I never crashed and have about 50 flights with my beginner drone. There is only one issue, I could never get more than 1000th range from the transmitter. The quadcopter quick goes into RTH mode and come back on its own.
Any suggestions as to why this hapens?. Should I replace transmitter and receiver? Or should I put a 2 watt booster on the transmitter?

  6. This quad is close to the Phantom 2 as far as being stable. The quality of the ESC and bearing are sub par. I had to replace the bearing after 7 flights. Fly times, expect 8 to 10 minutes with provided battery. The controller that come with it has no trim buttons. To program the flight control you must use a USB dongle that comes with the package. The IOC is nothing like the Phanton or QRX350 PRO, if you are think the IOC will save your bacon you will crash your quad. You have to know which way the quad is facing to know how your control will act. RTH, I had to use RTH and turned the quad on the way back(advertized you can do this) then my home position moved and the quad start flying that direction away from me. I say pass on this quad unless you enjoying fix parts and tinkering.

  7. I read it somewhere that the Free-X quads has some motor and ECS’s issues.
Also some users are complaining about flyaway.
